In Memory

Mary Jean Drake

Only a few weeks before the beginning of our senior year, a tragic accident took the life of Mary Jean Drake, a member of the class of 1969.

In her three years at MCHS, Mary Jean was active in class and club activities.  As a freshman, she wa a member of the F.H.A.  In her sophomore year she played junior varsity basketball and was a member of the Jr. Tri-Hi-Y.  As a junior, Mary Jean was enrolled in the Sr. Tri-Hi-Y and the Library Club.  She also served as O and E Editor of the newspaper staff.

Our memoriam to Mary Jean exists not only on this page, but in the hearts of each person that knew her.

I first met Mary Jean when I was in elementary school.  Back then the schools played each other in basketball.  I do not remember which school she attended but still remember her jersey number - 0.

In high school I remember she was so excied that she talked to the Governor of GA (Lester Maddox )  She worked as a telephone operator.

I used to call Mary Jean "my little rat."  She liked it and thought it was funny.

The only thing small about Mary Jean was her body.  She had an incredible appetite--you never saw anyone who could eat more hot dogs!  She had a huge love of life and people, and a loving and generous heart.

We were in school together at Comer Elementary.  If you played basketball then, you'll remember our smallest team member who bounced all over the gym (full court in those ancient days) in a purple uniform.

Although we didn't share many classes in high school, we remained friends.  The horrible wreck that took her, her 2 brothers and her mother was a week before our senior year.  I will always wonder what her future would have been--knowing MJ, it would have been amazing!

To this day I can still see her in the hallway cutting up and laughing, I always loved to hear her laugh.  Had the most bubbly personality and always full of life. It was a sad day when we heard about the accident that took the lives of so many in her family.

Linda, you jogged my memory. I remember when I was at Ila, I played basketball and I remember playing number 0, Mary Jean! Does anyone know what school she went to?
